Re: [Maine-birds] Hummingbirds still here

I sure believe it was. Russet red on body and a distinctive broad band of white around tail. I can't figure out what else it might be. Any guesses?

Did you really mean Harris' because that would be a very good rarity for Nova Scotia?

I still have hummers at my feeder as well but this is the time of year that, as soon as you bring you feeder in to clean and refill, you need to get them right back out there or the birds take off. That's been my experience, anyway!

I also want to tell you that I just spent several days whale watching off the coast of Briar Island, Nova Scotia, on the Bay of Fundy and we saw several small groups of hummers flying over open water, heading south I bet. It was amazing to see! They flew right over the lobster boat we were in. We also saw lots of gannets, shearwaters and puffins. And I saw my first Harris hawk on the ground, as I walked along the Western Lighthouse trail which is rich in bird, bee, and butterfly ( I saw several monarchs, which was such a relief after 2 years of seeing none in Maine) life and the quietest (in terms of human activity) place I've experienced since I was a kid. No boats (besides one other whalewatching outfit-also a lobster boat), planes, construction or traffic.

www.brierislandwhalewatch.com if you're interested. We saw so many humpbacks!

I hope you get the chance to go.

that my hummingbirds are still feeding at my feeder, saw them
at their usual time and station. I have a small tube feeder and have been having to fill it every two or three days.
