I had a little time to spare today, so went off in search of Pine Grosbeaks. I stopped for gas at the Old Town exit off I-95…and there they were: at least a dozen grosbeaks chowing down next to the convenience store near Burger King. Unimpressive photo at https://www.facebook.com/MaineBirdingTrail. I drove the Stud Mill Road afterwards, searching for Northern Shrike. I usually turn up one or two, but none this winter so far. I did encounter four Common Redpolls. Otherwise, one of my favorite winter roads is a tad quiet.
