Flat Bay is open once again - the ice has melted and Common Goldeneye, Bufflehead, Red-breasted Mergansers and Long-tailed Ducks have quickly returned. What a delight to see them again!
Today we checked the East Machias River above the Route 1 bridge and found 34 Common Goldeneye and one female Barrow's Goldeneye. Below the bridge a lone Canada Goose was the first we have seen this year.
We scoped the sea from West Quoddy Head lighthouse but found nothing unusual. On the mudflats along the South Lubec Road we found a first winter Glaucous Gull which was feeding with Herring Gulls.
It was quite enjoyable to be birding in 50 degree weather with sunshine!
