Re: [Maine-birds] Re: Wobbly telescopes on tripods

Hi all,

I'm with Paul. I've used nothing else for over 20 years since I had my first scope. The "blue" Loctite or "Medium Strength" (I believe) Threadlocker are a simple, durable, and cheap solution.

These are both "breakable" with little effort (as opposed to true glues) so you can change equipment when needed. An extra "base plate" for the tripod head for your camera will reduce the effort even further.

A single bottle, which costs just a few bucks, will last years.  Once a year - maybe twice if you use it often - break the seal, scrape it out with a toothpick or end of a paper clip, and reapply.  And make sure to use the set-screw on your Manfrotto, Gitzo, or other good tripod heads.

This is a super easy solution, dirt cheap, and unlike drilling into the scope, will not void the warranty!

In fact, it's so quick and easy, that if anyone drops by the store (Jeannette and I will be back from a vacation tomorrow) with 30 seconds to spare (and its best to do after you're done birding for the day), we'll apply some for free.

Loctite. The blue version. I've used it for 30+ years on numerous scopes. And most any anything else that involves a screw or bolt for that matter. They never loosen nor wiggle. Can find it at any hardware for about $3. Give it a try.
