[Maine-birds] Hairy Woodpecker behavior question

Hi all -- I watched a female Hairy Woodpecker pecking into the grass in our yard yesterday (like a Flicker), and wondered whether others have observed this behavior. I'm sure I have a fallible memory, but I don't recall seeing that before. Anting?
