I never get lucky enough to twitch a rare bird when I only have about 15 minutes to try to see it, but this morning I hustled down to Weskeag before work in the hope that Don Reimer's male RUFF would still be hanging around and visible, and I actually saw him! I gather he has been hanging around the front pools all morning; I was there from 10:30 - 10:45 and got great looks through both binoculars and others' scopes. If you're nearby, I encourage you to go see this beautiful bird with his fancy red ruff.
Thank you to Bart and Priscilla Wood, Don Mairs, and Louis Bevier for sharing their scopes.
Also exciting was seeing at least a dozen N. Shovelers, hens and drakes, in the water immediately behind the Ruff. FOY Bobolinks singing were icing on the cake.
This is what Jan Pierson and Peter Vickery were talking about on MPBN's "Maine Calling" yesterday (good job, both of you!): that contagious excitement we bird nerds get when we see something we've never seen before.
