Yesterday, my family, some friends, and I hiked Acadia National Park’s Penobscot Mountain. It was a beautiful, crisp fall day. With two nine-year-olds in tow, we took 4 hours to hike less than 4 miles, which meant that we were having a LOT of fun and I did a LOT of birding. And this was a winter finch day!
Hiking up the South Ridge Trail, 2 White-winged Crossbills flew over. A few minutes later, a pair of American Tree Sparrows were flitting in the grit along the edge of the alpine trail. A lone Bohemian Waxwing flew overhead. A Pine Grosbeak perched distantly atop a spruce. And just beyond the summit, we flushed a pair of Snow Buntings.
By the end of the hike we had tallied 12 species. A good day hiking in Acadia!
