Three kestrels arrived Sunday along with sounds of red winged blackbirds. The blackbirds nest in the grass on the islands and fields along the Sebasticook. The kestrels nest in each diagonal end of the old, big barn eaves. I have been looking for a 4th kestrel without success so far. The kestrels were flying around in the high winds. They were going from 3 big spruce trees near the river and one big oak near the barn yesterday (Sunday). They were having a good time and calling out very loudly. They were probably making the other birds nervous. The other birds were staying clear of the area.
Cleaned 15 tree swallow nest this past weekend. Only about 50% of the nests had bird activity last year. The box nests were usually 13 out of 15 filled in previous years. The tree swallows return here between April 9 (2012) and April 12th (2011).
