Re: [Maine-birds] Additional Highlights This Week, 8/25-8/31

Thank you guys.  I don't have the opportunity to observe much lately but am following your records and appreciate your diligence and devotion.
I'm trying to decipher gulls by flight.  I'm in Augusta and there are some interesting patterns with flocks but I don't yet know 'who's who and what's what,' if you will.

[Maine-birds] Mt. Desert Rock end of season

Hi all,

Yesterday, the 2018 field season on Mt. Desert Rock wrapped up and I'm currently writing from Bar Harbor to sum up my observations. It's been a long time since I last wrote, and I apologize for that, but it's been a very busy season out there. First off, there have been many more whales seen this year than last, which is encouraging as a sign of more food in the area, which then brought in more birds.

Pelagic species were nearly daily, with Great Shearwater easily being the most numerous of those, although all four regular species were seen, along with a day or so of 5000 Wilson's Storm-Petrels, but usually less. All three jaeger species were seen with moderate regularity in the second half of the season. Skuas were surprisingly common (get that...common!) throughout the season with a total of 35 minimum sightings, all of which were South Polar or Skua sp, with no confirmable Great Skua at this point. Northern Gannets were also frequent with a high count of 60. One Great Cormorant stopped by to rest with some Double-crested Cormorants for a day or two.

Nineteen species of shorebirds were seen, with an early Purple Sandpiper, and two goodies for the county, American Golden-Plover and Baird's Sandpiper. Phalaropes also started coming through with a couple hundred Red-necked and a few Red mixed in with them.

I didn't do a formal count of Herring Gull nests, but I estimate between 75-100 were active this year, with only 9 Great Black-backed Gull nests. Funny as it is, there were almost always more Great Black-backed Gulls present on the island, with a high of 1273 on 8/29 and only 615 Herring Gulls on 7/31. Lesser Black-backed Gulls also made 20 appearances throughout the season. There were also 5 Great Blue Herons and one Great Egret.

Raptors included an Osprey, a juvenile Peregrine Falcon, and 5 Merlin.

As for passerines, there was an OK push in the later part of the season. Flycatchers were not all too regular, but we did have a Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, a couple Least Flycatchers, and some other unidentified Empidonax sp. Eastern Kingbirds were also recorded a few days. There were five species of swallows seen, including a rare-for-the-county Purple Martin and a Petrochelidon sp. that still has me thinking.
Red-breasted Nuthatches were almost omnipresent, with a day high count of 16, which likely signals a very good breeding year!
A Blue-gray Gnatcatcher showed well for an evening and morning, constantly flitting about everywhere it went. You would often hear the high trill of a Cedar Waxwing, even though you wouldn't always see them. Purple Finches also became regular later on and an American Goldfinch also joined them.
There were few sparrows, but they included good species such as a Lark Sparrow in mid July, and a Nelson's Sparrow in August. An excellent bird, and one that I read about as being a fairly common migrant back when they banded at the Rock, were two Yellow-breasted Chat that both appeared the same day, but only one remained until I left yesterday.
15 warbler species visited the island, which included a few goodies. Two Prairie Warblers stopped by at different dates, which are rare for the county, as well as a Mourning Warbler, which is always nice to see. By far though, the best warbler was an adult male Prothonotary Warbler that had an extended stay of 6 days. What a treat that was! Tennessee and Cape May Warblers also showed but for a few days.
In the last week, we were also visited by, as I believe it, four different Dickcissels, so keep an open ear out for those guys.
The last new bird of the season, which took me by surprise as we were packing up, was a Ruby-throated Hummingbird. It was not long before then that the winds had shifted to the North, and when that happened, Monarch Butterflies started filling the island, with a high count of 16! Good thing we have a Rosa rugosa bush and a couple asters for them...

Overall, there were 92 species seen on or around the island, with 2 provisionals.

Here's to a great season on the rock, even though I wish I could stay longer. I will, hopefully, go back there in a few days with a class, but that's not set in stone yet. There may be more chances later in the year, and I'm gonna jump on that as quick as I can.

And thanks for the shoutout from Craig Kesselheim from an earlier post, and Tammy & Rob Packie as well. I appreciate it a whole lot! Hope to see you guys around!

Thanks a whole lot, and as always, good birding!

Nathan

[Maine-birds] Monhegan, 8.25-8.28.18

I was out on Monhegan this past weekend. While I wasn't actively birding while I was there (i.e. did not use my binoculars once), I thought I'd share a few observations for those who might wonder what goes on out there bird-wise when it's not peak migration time.

The island did not get any of the summer rainstorms we got on the mainland and is in a drought right now. The Ice Pond is as low as I've ever seen it. I did not note any sandpipers on the newly revealed mudflats there. But a yard near the pond was recently visited by a Great Blue Heron.

Noted for warblers: only Common Yellowthroat and Yellow Warbler.

Cedar Waxwings have begun flocking up. I came upon several active groups of them in berry bushes and blackberry patches. It was also fun watching bunches of goldfinches feeding on the sunflowers.

Heard a Carolina Wren singing several times in the neighborhood of the brewery. Hopefully that species is re-establishing its foothold out there.

I also distinctly heard a DICKCISSEL calling at one point, near the Trailing Yew, and spotted the bird as it flew over (so I know it wasn't a starling!), but it didn't land within my sight.

While I didn't spot the three Ring-necked Pheasant chicks that I first saw back in late June, I was shown a very recent photo taken by someone who lives near where I saw them. All three are still hanging around together, and one of them is clearly a male—he's starting to get his lovely adult colors.

On a non-avian note, it was heartening to see so many Monarchs out there. The nursery patch of milkweed at the Trailing Yew hosts many caterpillars and chrysalises, as well. Interestingly, I didn't see a single Lady of either species, when last year that was the predominant species in August.

Headed back out in a couple of weeks, hopefully will have more to report then!

[Maine-birds] Little Egret - Falmouth, 8/30

A LITTLE EGRET was foraging with a group of Snowy Egrets off the North Meadow at Gilsland Farm during Maine Audubon's Weekly Bird Walk this morning. This bird had much paler lores than the one photographed in the Scarborough Marsh on 27 Aug.

Here is a list from our walk around the West Meadow, including so distant digiscoped shots of the Little Egret: https://ebird.org/me/view/checklist/S48167674

Glad to get in on the annual nighthawk migration with 6 over our house in Sidney this afternoon. There seemed to be a few swallows (barn? cliff?) traveling with them.

[Maine-birds] Re: ROSEATE SPOONBILL - Dover-Foxcroft, 8/27

I hope people do not try to get too close to the bird as it is most likely stressed as it is not in it's normal habitat.  If you have have seen a roseate elsewhere, eg Florida, I think it is best to be considerate to the bird as well as the land owner, and pass on this one.   I have witnessed serious Great Gray Owl harassment in the past.  "Please Bird Responsibly". ;-)

Re: [Maine-birds] ROSEATE SPOONBILL - Dover-Foxcroft, 8/27

As one of the other cars up there (neither Julie nor I were the double parked car) I did not see anything outside the norm happen on account of birders. Since I can't speak for any times other than while I was there I can't say what Jim has had to put up with on account of this bird. Hopefully it hasn't been as bad as it seemed.

My son and I spent about 50 minutes using the bed of my truck as an elevated platform while there and the elevation added to the visibility without having to go further in. While there the bird mostly slept but occasionally would look around and preen.

Cool bird and a great opportunity. We appreciated the chance to see it. It was a lifer for my son.

Thanks,
Rob O'Connell

[Maine-birds] Head Harbor Passage Trip Report and Washington Co shorebirds

On Saturday, August 25th, Maine Audubon ran its now-annual Head Harbor Passage Trip and had a phenomenal showing of gulls and shearwaters. We hit the tide just right to have an impressive feeding frenzy of thousands of Bonaparte's Gulls with at least two adult Little Gulls in the mix. The Sooty Shearwater flock near East Quoddy Head swelled to 700+ birds on Saturday morning with many birds being quite tame sitting on the water. I posted a full trip report here: https://www.maineaudubon.org/news/head-harbor-passage-2018-trip-report/ and wanted to express my thanks to Chris Bartlett, Woody Gillies, and Captain Butch Harris for making this trip a great success.

Before the trip, I had my one of my best shorebirding experience at the Lubec Flats as the tide was just beginning to drop on the afternoon of the 24th. Diversity and overall numbers had been below average the past two weeks while Woody and I were guiding in the area but a couple thousand peeps with a few notable species made for a great study. Among the 1600 Semipalmated Sandpipers was a yellow-flag "ML7" that bandedbirds.org reports as originally being captured near Nickerie, Suriname on 6 Dec 2016. A juvenile Western Sandpiper was my first for Washington County but the most interesting bird was an apparent Dunlin x White-rumped Sandpiper (hybrid). Photos of these individuals are in my eBird list here: https://ebird.org/me/view/checklist/S48051050

I also had two Lesser Black-backed Gulls roosting on either sides of the Lubec Flats, visible from Quoddy Head Road. Of more note there, an apparent 'Ipswich' Savannah Sparrow that kept coming into the parking area was by far my earliest for that subspecies. Birds of North America says they don't migrate until mid-September so I'd appreciate feedback if anyone disagrees with my identification. Photos are available here: https://ebird.org/me/view/checklist/S48050897
