I’m not sure if this is a continuing Red-throated Loon that is losing some of its bright breeding plumage, or just the time of day of the photos which varied the colors (3:00 pm on 8/12 vs. 6:00 pm today).Or it may be a second bird, as this one appears to have less distinct black and white striping on the nape and it appears to have more white on the edges of its bill. It still has a red neck, a gray head with a red eye, an up-turned slim bill compared to nearby larger Common Loons.
We had not had a chance to go for a boat ride since last Sunday, exactly one week ago, and we never dreamt we would re-find it or find another RTLO today. This time it was just west of Jamaica Point in Great Pond, but probably less than a mile from where we saw it/one last week on August, 12th. This time bird seemed to dive a little more often and kept further from the boat as well, but my guess is that it is the same bird hanging around.
I had not seen anyone else post about finding this bird in the last week, but it does take access to a boat to get to the areas of the lake where we found it.
