I now have a bit more information on the White-winged Dove in Auburn. It was first noticed in mid-April of this year and has been in the area all summer. It was last seen "three nights ago" which I take to be Monday 8/17. It comes to feeders and a bird bath in late afternoon with Mourning Doves but seems to stay away from the other doves. It is not known where it goes during most of the day. The people reporting it are not birders, they have a barking dog and an elderly resident and do not want people coming to the door or back yard. Nevertheless the area to check is Lake Street between Park Ave. and Hotel Rd. but closer to Park Ave. Lake St. can have traffic and some going too fast, but there is a stop sign at Lake and Park to slow traffic a bit. There are also two developments with loop roads which might be worth looking, or it could be along Park Ave. (winding and heavy traffic) or along Gamage Ave. but that is a dense residential area. If I hear any more I will post. If anyone does find it, please post too.
The photos were sent to Peter Vickery and Bill Sheehan. White-winged Dove are seen nearly yearly in Maine now, but I suspect most of us have yet to see one here!
