[Maine-birds] Frenchman Bay..Purple Sandpipers

12 May First nature cruise of the season.
Took our first cruise around Frenchman Bay for the 2013 tourist season. Cool, light rain, 4 ft. seas at the mouth of the bay.
Most interesting birds were 4 Purple Sandpipers on the high (west) end of Long Porcupine Island.
Red-throated Loon, 1 flying south out of the bay
Common Loon, 10+ both breeding and winter plumages
Great Cormorant, 4 at various places around the bay
Double-crested Cormorants, many, some carrying nesting material to Thrumcap Island
Common Eider, many, mostly males, a few females on Egg Rock.
Red-breasted Merganser, 8, all males, all flying southward in the bay.
Osprey, one deep on nest on the Grindstone Neck spindle at Winter Harbor.
Bald Eagle, pair sitting on trees adjacent to the Sheep Porcupine nest.
Semipalmated Sandpiper 21 flew from rocks on end of Egg Rock and past east toward Schoodic Pt.
Herring Gull, about 80 on nests on Egg Rock.
Great Black-backed Gull, 20+ with the HEGUs on Egg Rock.
Black Guillemot, very common, all through the bay, all in breeding plumage.

Non-birds: Harbor Seal 50+ some with pups on Egg Rock, other swimming various spots in bay.
White-tailed Deer on the Nature Conservancy's Turtle Island.
