Weather:
Rain in the morning, leaving behind a thick overcast that smothered the
summit. There was some visibility around 1:00p.m., enough to start the
count. The air was still opaque with moisture and the distant horizon was
often obscured by fog and more rain showers in the afternoon. The wind was
light, out of the south and southwest. Temperatures were close to 60F.
Raptor Observations:
Once again this season, birds were moving in less than ideal weather, lots
of birds! A glipse of sun was all that was needed for the air to fill with
small kettles and streaming birds. Immature Bald Eagles drifted by in ones
and twos, each sporting a unique blend of white and brown, with various
molt patterns visible. The ninth Peregrine Falcon of the season powered
past, an adult with no use for thermals, setting a new record for
peregrines seen in a year at the hawkwatch. Then it was over, as suddenly
as it had started. With barely an hour gone by the skies were nearly empty
of raptors as another band of showers moved in.
Non-raptor Observations:
Not much else was moving. Some of the feathered locals enjoyed bathing in
the newly filled pools at the summit, fresh water a luxury after the last
few weeks.
Non-raptor Migrants:
Double-crested Cormorant- 5 Great Blue Heron- 2
Chimney Swift- 2 Tree Swallow- 11 Barn Swallow- 10
swallow sp.- 9 Blue Jay- 9 warbler sp.- 3
Predictions:
Mostly cloudy to overcast with a chance of rain showers in the morning. The
wind will be out of the southwest at 5-10mph or a little higher, increasing
through the afternoon. Temperatures should reach the mid 60s. If today is
any indication, there are birds- many birds, poised and ready to come
through after being blocked so long by the weather. It could be exciting in
the weather cooperates!
