[Maine-birds] Harlequin Ducks (Schoodic) and Spruce Grouse

After some fun with Schoodic Environment and Research Center (SERC) during their celebration of International Migratory Bird Day, I took advantage of the lifting fog to see if there were any Harlequins at Schoodic Point today. There were – but just a pair.

Yesterday was a scouting day downeast in preparation for some upcoming tours. I wanted to check in with my favorite Spruce Grouse to make sure they were sticking to their usual location. A male and a female turned up and were quite well behaved. I put the video on the web site at http://mainebirdingtrail.com/  For those who have met these grouse along this trail before, this one is neither “Bruce” nor “Bruce Deuce.” This one is “Robert the Bruce.” He’s the third male that I see less frequently than the other two. But judging by the pile of poop around his little patch of woods, he’s not going to move along until he’s convinced that the females are no longer interested.

And, as it happens, these grouse were the topic of this week’s birding column in the Bangor Daily News: http://bangordailynews.com/2013/05/10/outdoors/spruce-grouse-talk-scheduled-for-holden/
