Re: [Maine-birds] Appledore Island LBBG

Hi William,

Thanks for the photograph of the famous F05 . In the Lesser Black-backed Gull world this bird is unique partly because it is banded and easy to see but also because of the fact that it has been actively breeding with a Herring Gull there from 2007-2011. I do not know if it was there last year but there is a picture of this bird in Volume 45 Jan/Feb ABA Birding Magazine article on Lesser Black-backed Gulls by Amar Ayyash. If you have not seen the article it is an excellent overview of Lesser Black-backed Gull.

I am  learning more about LBBG because we have had an injured bird in CUBA and this year I photographed it close-up!   The bird in Cuba that we have been seeing for almost 10 years, is the subspecies Larus fuscus graellsii , which is a pale gray with black wing tips.  Your "F05" bird appears to be the subspecies L.f. fuscus.  "F05" may be the only known member of fuscus subspecies in North America as stated by Amar Ayyash.

Thanks for the post and updates on the nesting activity of this bird would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Michael
