[Maine-birds] Bohemian Waxwings

We observed three Bohemian Waxwings in downtown Orono Saturday. They were mixed in with a 15+ flock of Cedar Waxwings and Robins.

Other birds of note were a large flock of Blackbirds that seem to use the downtown area as a roost seasonally. Plenty of Red-winged Blackbirds, Common Grackles were observed, and I heard a Brown-headed Cowbird.
Happy birding,

About 100 yards north of the parking area, a wooded trail leads out to a well constructed viewing stand that is generally under utilized by birders; this venue provides a lengthwise marsh view and highlights other areas not visible from the roadway.

From the paved parking area and proceeding further south along Buttermilk Lane to the hilltop summit (near an old barn foundation) is a more expansive view of the marsh, with several deeper pools favored by ducks, herons and other waders.

The Weskeag River is tidal. The pools and pannes within the marsh are flooded monthly by sea water, but are otherwise rain dependent. In spring ang late summer shorebird seasons, the best time to visit is high tide. During the brief spring waterfowl migration period, any time birds are present is good.

Hi Don,

Would you tell me the best locations for birding on the marsh? I am headed to Rockland this week with my Ornithology class (Colby College), and it would be great to be most efficient with our time. Any additional tips you may have for the area, would also be much appreciated.

Thanks a bunch,
Tony

[Maine-birds] Berwick and S. Berwick Canada Geese, Tuckahoe, Sunday

I checked out Blackberry Hill Rd in Berwick, and Circuit Rd and found over
300 CANADA GEESE and about 82 MALLARDS. Great to see the ice and snow age
loose their grip on the hay and cornfields. The pond on Blackberry Hill is
still frozen.

I stopped at Tuckahoe Turf Farm and maybe 20% is free of snow and ice. I
asked a lady who walks there regularly and she said about 30 Canada Geese
have been there in the last week.

[Maine-birds] Snowy Owl

Hi Everyone,

I have a very sad post to write, in fact it has taken me over a week to do it. I have been taking photos of many Snowy Owls this winter from Portland to southern Mass.
As you all know and appreciate the fact that we have been blessed with an abundance of these beautiful birds all over our coastline and beyond. I have acquired a special
fondness for one of these owls that has been seen by me and many other bird lovers at Parsons Beach in Kennebunk. The owl has been there almost daily for the past two months.
It has been seen in the marsh, on top of driftwood, on top of different telephone poles and even to the delight of many birders, sitting in plan view in a lone scrub pine tree on the side
of the road. One late afternoon I got a call from a birdwatcher friend of mine, that he saw the owl in the field and it was unable to hold it's head up. I drove over there as fast as I could
but when I got there it had just died. I felt terrible. I picked it up and it was just feathers and bones. To me it obviously starved to death. I felt around it's breast bone and there was no meat on it at all. I took it to the Rachel Carson Wildlife Center Headquarters in Wells and gave it to the Marine Biologist there and two of the biologist on duty checked it and did
agree that it did indeed die from starvation.

It only go's to prove that the outward appearance of these beautiful owls does not tell us of the health status of their condition. I have been told by Norm Smith, a Snowy Owl
researcher and expert of 32 years in the field of owl studies, has said that almost always the owls we see around here are first year owls from the Arctic. That means that they
are only 6 to 7 months old when they first start arriving in the fall. They have traveled so far and when they get here they are are in desperate need to eat and regain weight
and strength to return in the spring. As most of you know, they were raised on Lemmings since birth, so rodents are their main diet. The problem this year in Maine has been
the deep snow cover we have had all winter long which has only recently been melting down, so the opportunity for the owls to find rodents has been extremely difficult. For some of the Snowy Owls, at least the ones that have the strength and courage to attack and kill ducks will probably do well and survive the winter here. Some of the owls do not go after the ducks for one reason or another because the owl that I am talking about that has been at Parsons Beach, had opportunities every day all winter to try for a duck but never did and
there was always ducks present there, in the tidal river and in the marsh. There was always Black ducks, Mallards and Canadian Geese to try for but it didn't.
I miss that owl. I went to Parsons Beach almost every day just to see it and photograph it. You can see photos of it that I took just three weeks ago. I have many of them but I
only have posted four of them on my flickr account.   They are the first 4 images.

Yesterday, a Northern Shrike was trying to pin down something in the melting snow at the edge of the marsh; then on the way to compost flushed a woodcock! This morning on Keene Neck two Ruffed Grouse were crossing the road to get to the other side (sorry couldn’t help but add the last bit to  the sentence!) .

Lots of Song Sparrows, American Tree Sparrow still here along with the usual winter birds. Spring has sprung here!

We have a small flock of sparrows that frequent our feeder. This winter and especially today with the heavy rain, the sparrows sit on our tires of our vehicles, protected from the rain by the wheel opening. I have also seen them use this when the hawk is around as a place to hide.

[Maine-birds] Golden Eagle-ph- at Flood Farm on Sat, 87 Harlequins off Isle au Hat

David Ladd sent along several pics of an adult or near adult Golden Eagle passing over the Flood Farm, Clinton yesterday, 29 March. It seems like Goldens have reached double digit numbers this winter and spring.

Harlequins: Barbara and I joined the Island Heritage Trust boat trip around Isle au Haut on Saturday. The trip was led by Bob Duschene. Seabirds were generally sparse but there were 87+ Harlequins off the southeastern end of Isle au Haut. Weather conditions prevented us from circumnavigating the island but this number was comparable to previous boat trips I took off Isle au Haut in the 70s and early 80s. There are >250 - 350 harlequins off the island, including the small islands to the east. This has been the largest concentration of Harlequins on the east coast and I suspect continues to be so.

Also seen: 8 snappy adult Great Cormorants with bright white throats and fancy white flank patches. Lots of cresty head flashing.

Few eiders, no more than 200, used to be thousands.

The area around Stonington and Isle au Haut is off most Maine birder's beaten path, except Chip and SallyR., but it's lovely country and the island is spectacular. I encourage others to take the trip in the future and to think about the Wings, Waves and Woods bird festival that takes place on Deer Isle, 16 - 18 May (I've got nothing to do with the festival, just want to point it out). It has several boat trips.

Best, Peter

[Maine-birds] rw blackbird in Sidney

The rain has opened up a four or five-foot diameter patch on our lawn and a rw blackbird wasted no time finding it. He was accompanied by 7 robins who split themselves between the driveway and the patch. The blackbird also has discovered sunflower seeds under the feeder so I'm enjoying the contrast of my winter feeder birds (chickadee, wb nuthatch) and the blackbird. Happy spring, such as it is.

We had a nice birding day - saw the two male and one female Barrow's Goldeneye in East Machias as well as six Ring-necked Ducks.  We failed to find the Snowy Owl on the Leighton Point Road in Pembroke (we checked in the morning and again in the afternoon). Across the road from the "Snowy Owl House" we heard a Northern Shrike singing and saw it as well.  Another Northern Shrike was observed on the Passamoquoddy Trail in Pleasant Point.

[Maine-birds] Snowy Owl - Parsons Beach Sat. 3/29

Terry Parsons (yes, related) and I spotted and watched a Snowy Owl from 2:30-3:30 this afternoon, 3/29, at Parsons Beach. It was perched atop a chimney on the blue/gray/white house on the left as you go out to the beach from the roadside parking. We walked up the sand, close enough to verify its turning its head, feathers and wings fluttering in the wind, with good binoculars, but not close enough for a good photo without a scope.

The last report I have seen of one from there was on February 11.

[Maine-birds] Beech Mountain hawk-watch

Some friends, a passel of six-year-olds, and I hiked Beech Mountain in Acadia National Park today with the intent of doing some spring hawk-watching. While not as productive as Derek Lovitch’s Bradbury Mountain Hawk Watch, in an hour and a half (12:45-1:15) we saw:

6 Turkey Vultures
2 Bald Eagles
1 Red-shouldered Hawk
1 Red-tailed Hawk

[Maine-birds] Nighthawk Monhegan

Definitely hearing a Nighthawk outside my house right now (at dusk).
I have a Great Pyrenees that guards my chickens and he does not like the sound and barked at it.

[Maine-birds] Hairy woodpecker with crossed beak

I spent some time at the Green Point Wildlife Management Area in Dresden around lunchtime today and came across a very sociable Hairy Woodpecker with a crossed (broken?) beak. It was still pecking away at some soft wood. I have some clear photos, but I don't have a public album where I can post them - let me know if you want me to send you a shot.

Several vocal Bluebirds too!

Re: [Maine-birds] Juvenile Golden Eagle on MDI?

It may be possible.  I am aware that someone believes they have a pair in Brooksville, and have for several years.  I hope to meet that person this coming summer and will ask if they'll share their knowledge.

[Maine-birds] Cackling Geese, Gilsland Farm

A mini-flock of Cackling Geese were present at Gilsland Farm in Falmouth this morning, as were a few Canada Geese.  Trying to determine the Cackling's subspecies and leaning toward Richardson's, but I'm not really sure.  Overall they looked "slim" and had very squared heads.  I was fortunate to stand right above them on the trail as they were hugging the shoreline.  No camera with me of course.  Other waterfowl were limited to just Buffleheads and Black Ducks.

Re: [Maine-birds] Phippsburg Broad Winged

Along the same vein - I did the perimeter of Merrymeeting Bay yesterday, looking for indications of Ice-Out,  and saw very few birds, anywhere.  But there was Coast Guard activity in the Narrows (North end of Bath) and two of their boats crashing thru the ice at the end of Browns Pt Rd
(photo here:  http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S17620408 ).

There were also big sheets of ice floating down the Kennebec off Bath, something I haven't seen all winter.

No ducks in the bay anywhere. ?Porque? No open water anywhere.  Also a sharp absence of passerines in any of the ag fields.  No icterids, H Larks, S Buntings, crows.

Broad Winged Hawk flying low over West Point Road near entrance to the Totman Cove Preserve. First of season here!
Oddly, as I was driving, at the very moment I saw the Broadie,  I was mulling over the possible impact on the migratory birds of this unrelenting freezing weather. Not the cold air, but specifically, I was wondering if the small bodies of water remaining frozen for so long will retard the hatchings of frog, toad and aquatic insect eggs then the critters to follow  that so many birds depend on.  Traditionally, we make note here of the exact date that the ice lets out on Center Pond on Rt 209. The ice out date always falls between my husband's birthday on March 22 and mine on April 5. We each place a wager as to who's BD the ice will be out for. It doesn't look promising to be out even by April 5. The ice quality is changing slightly, but reports are that the fishermen's ice augers are drilling 2 feet deep or more before hitting water. I can't help but think this will influence hatchings of various things. Does anyone have any thoughts or information about this?
