Official Counter: Jeannette Lovitch, Katrina Fenton
Observers: Derek Lovitch, Zane Baker
Visitors:
There were 16 visitors to the hawkwatch, offering to bring coffee,
searching for Red-shouldered Hawks, and enjoying Spring Break.
Weather:
The skies were a crisp, clear blue today, with a few snowball clouds thrown
in later on. Temperatures rose from a frosty 11F into the low 20s. The wind
was out of the NW, strong enough to slow down the flow of migrants.
Raptor Observations:
Distant birds rose to vanish into the blue. A Cooper's Hawk tore through
the gap in a slate streak. A trio of Bald Eagles lingered in the afternoon
air. The sky seemed vast and empty with so many fewer birds than yesterday.
Non-raptor Observations:
There were a few non-raptors on the move, American Crows (5) and a Common
Grackle were heading north while a Great Blue Heron and a Common Merganser
headed back south. A flock of 11 Cedar Waxwings came past the hawkwatch a
handful of times, probably in search of juniper berries.
Predictions:
It looks like we'll have one more day of beautiful weather before the next
storm. Tomorrow's high will again be in the 20s, with mostly sunny skies
clouding over later in the day. The wind will be out of the SW, increasing
to 10-15mph. It should be great weather for migrants!
