RE: [Maine-birds] Scarborough Marsh

Having looked at Francesco's photos of the loon in Scarborough Marsh, it appears that there may be a wound on the loon's breast, or at the very least, there is a significant patch of missing feathers likely to compromise waterproofing. The area where the bird was seen yesterday is frozen this morning, but we do have a couple of scouts keeping an eye on things. If anyone birding the marsh in the next few days sees a loon resembling the one in Francesco's photos (again, the link is here: https://www.flickr.com/gp/travelingpigeon/2i4x5w/), please give us a call at 382-6761 rather than post, as I am not often near my computer during the day.
Thanks,

Walked along the Scarborough Marsh section of the Eastern Trail today around 11:30. Nobody around, very very cold wind… but good birding.
- Common loon with very unusual behavior — seemed to preen its belly repeatedly, and shake water off its wings… when did so, showed a patch in the belly that was without feathers. It also got off the water a couple of times, to lay on the banks of the river, not far from the bridge. Hope he/she is ok.
Francesco
