Hi all,
I spent Sunday morning birding two sections of the Waterboro Barrens
Preserve (managed by The Nature Conservancy). The highlight was at
least one RED CROSSBILL (type 10) in each section. If you're
interested in checking out this sizable tract of Pitch Pine and Scrub
Oak in York County, I can recommend two access points.
==Gray Road, Shapleigh Roadside Parking==
Directions: From Ross Corner in Shapleigh, go 1.7 miles north on
Newfield Road; then, take a left onto Gray Road. Park here and enter
the preserve by crossing the street and traveling east. I've only
explored about 0.5 miles of this section, up to the stream crossing.

==Buff Brook Road, Waterboro Parking Area==
Directions: From Ross Corner in Shapleigh, go 1.1 miles north on
Newfield Road; then, take a right onto Round Pond Road. In 0.7 miles,
go left at the fork (Buff Brook Road) and continue to the parking area
at the end (about 0.7 miles). A trail map of this large section can be
seen here: http://www.mainetrailfinder.com/trails/trail/waterboro-barrens-preserve

Note that some of the trails are used by snowmobilers in winter, so
caution is advised. Also, I imagine that the Buff Brook Road access
point may become tricky to reach depending on snow depth (I'm not sure
if it gets plowed).
Best,
Josh
