I returned to the island yesterday but didn't have much time to wander
around.
Birds seem normal for the time period. SONG SPARROWS dominate the
landscape and SAVANNAH SPARROWS are almost absent. That's a flip-flop
in numbers that happens every year in early September.
A few land species observed:
MOCKINGBIRD (2);
SEMIPALMATED PLOVER (8);
SPOTTED SANDPIPER (2);
PEREGRINE FALCON (2);
MERLIN (1);
OSPREY (2);
RT HUMMINGBIRD (10, including 2 juveniles being feed);
CEDAR WAXWING (6);
SWAMP SPARROW (12);
SONG SPARROW (100+);
SAVANNAH SPARROW (5+);
RED BREASTED NUTHATCH (4);
BROWN CREEPER (1);
FLYCATCHER sp.(8).
Over water:
NORTHERN GANNET (22);
DC CORMORANT (15);
HERRING GULLS (200+);
GRT BLK BKD GULL (50+);
BLK LEGGED KITTYWAKE (50+);
SHEARWATER sp. (30+);
RAZORBILL (30+);
PUFFIN (4).
Other fliers:
LITTLE BROWN BAT (2 day-feeding);
MONARCH BUTTERFLY (200+);
QUESTION MARK BUTTERFLY (25+);
RED ADMIRAL BUTTERFLY (20+);
WHITE ADMIRAL BUTTERFLY (2);
AMERICAN LADY BUTTERFLY (15+);
PAINTED LADY BUTTERFLY (10+);
MOURNING CLOAK BUTTERFLY (8);
CABBAGE WHITE BUTTERFLY (15+);
SULPHUR sp. (15+).
At least 1 Peregrine and 1 Merlin stayed here overnight and 3 more of
each have joined those this morning. They are keeping the other birds
very alert and mostly hidden.
