[Maine-birds] Field Sparrows-Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport

I spotted two Field Sparrows this morning at Beech Hill Preserve in Rockport, the first I've noted there this spring. They reguarly nest in the preserve. Also, at least 10 Eastern Towhees were singing all over the preserve, along the field edges, and small groups of White-throated Sparrows appeared to be moving through.

Yesterday a friend who visits the preserve on a daily basis reported FOS Prairie Warbler, as well. We have seen no evidence of Prairie W. nesting there, but have in past years heard them singing well into the summer.

Also, saw a Bald Eagle soar past that might have elicited the report of a possible Golden Eagle among some participants on a walk I co-led on Beech Hill last week. I didn't see last week's bird, but the bird I saw today fits the description I was given. This large, bulky bird was very mottled throughout its body, with big white patches on the tops of both wings. Head mottled also, though more dark than light. The tail appeared to have started its molt to white, as the central tail feathers were white but the rest brown; definitely not a white tail band, but white down the length of the middle of the tail. Third cycle bird? Juvenile and adult Bald Eagles are regularly seen year-round on nearby Chickawaukie Lake, visible SW of the hill, and are often seen flying over the hill, so this being a "local" bird isn't far-fetched.
