I've been up on Mt Desert Island, mostly hiking but getting in some birding as well. Some highlights include:
On Sunday a breeding plumaged Horned Grebe was hanging out at Sand Beach, feeding quite close to shore.
On Monday I went out on the Bar Harbor Whale Watch and saw, among the usual Greater Shearwaters and Wilson's Storm Petrels, an apparent South Polar Skua. I originally reported it to eBird as a Great Skua, but that was merely a mistake on my part. It wasn't out where we saw the whales but still quite a ways out to sea, and I'm pretty sure I saw it both coming and going. Also of note (possibly) was a single Northern Fulmar, which seems a bit early to me.
Good Birding
