[Maine-birds] Scaup

On Round Lake, just south of Moosehorn NWR (Baring) there were 150 distant scaup. Most appeared to be Lesser, but there were a few Greater and at least one Ring-necked Duck, so consider it a mixed flock. More accurate numbers would have been possible despite the range if the little buggers had just stopped diving long enough to count.

Also, for those who have met the Spruce Grouse in Lubec known as “Bruce Deuce,” you’ll be happy to know he has survived the summer just fine and his attitude is unchanged. Today, he just sat on a branch and ignored me. Two days ago, he chased somebody off the trail. He can be a peppy little brute when he wants to be.

Black-legged Kittiwakes are abundant at both West and East Quoddy Head and there are still plenty of lingering Bonaparte’s Gulls. Lots of Horned Grebes have moved into the waters between south Lubec and Campobello, joined by a couple of Red-necks and my FOS Bufflehead.
