I wanted to reassure you of the security behind the Maine Birds Google Group. There is no way for anyone to harvest your emails from this group. If you view the group on the web, you will notice that posts are listed under the "display name" that you choose. 

If there is some computer harvesting emails that are used on this forum, it is most likely from a third party digest that is less secure. For example, if you go to the American Birding Association's digest page: http://birding.aba.org you will notice that email address are displayed in a fairly unsecured format. For example: http://birding.aba.org/message.php?mesid=802703&MLID=MAINE&MLNM=Maine displays your email with " AT " instead of an "@" sign. It is fairly ridiculous to think this is secure; it is easier for a computer to do a 'find and replace' than to harvest those emails. There are digests that do this properly: surfbirds (http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Mail/Maine_Birds/1675785?year=2014) and sialia.com (http://digest.sialia.com/?rm=message;id=941766) both display a sender's name that can not be traced back to them.

Accounts on this group that have never posted, and therefore did not show up on a digest site, did not receive this unsolicited email. So I would encourage you to take this issue up with sites like the ABA's which do not protect your email.

I received an unsolicited email for the Konkoit App for tracking birds saying that "We see that you are a contributor to your local online birding forum."  Has anyone else received one?  If they didn't get my email from here I can't imagine where it came from.  The unsubscribe page had me classified as from Maine, so concerning.
