Yesterday, an increase in shorebirds brought 120+ Semipalmated Plover and 6+ Black-bellied Plover and a sprinkling of Greater Yellow-legs. A consistent cluster of 11 Greater Yellow-legs are at the small salt ponds on the north side of Route 1A at the west end of the Harrington River bridge in Harrington at high tide. They've been there for nearly 1.5 weeks now.
About 40 Black Ducks have taken up feeding in Flat Bay within the past week, Bonaparte Gulls still linger to make a fuss over food sources in the shallow low tide waters, but last Monday a large spiral of Ring-billed Gulls rose over Flat Bay to a very great height (we could hardly see them after a while) and then disappeared. I don't think they'll be back this year...... Very few Double-crested Cormorants - down from a high of about 35.
Palm Warblers and Yellow-rumped Warblers feed in the trees around the house and the ubiquitous Red-breasted Nuthatches seem to be growing in number - even more than what we have already experienced this fall.
Large flocks of Dark-eyed Juncos feed along our driveway and road.
We're watching for the first Buffleheads to appear!
