[Maine-birds] Frenchman Bay jaegers

6 October 2016

Huge schools of Mackerel chasing Herring in Frenchman Bay today. Some covering a half mile in size. Feeding on them were:
Herring Gull est. 1000 all age groups.
Great Black-backed Gull est. 150
Laughing Gull 20 Remained on periphery of feeding area but seemed to be participating in the feeding frenzy.
Iceland Gull 1 juvenile
Parasitic Jaeger 3 Feeding on fish, diving and catching them like the gulls.
Bald Eagle 1 adult, landing on the water and taking off with fish.
When seen from the distance the flock of birds would hover 100 ft. or so in the air and then suddenly spiral down to a specific spot in the water looking like a giant whirlpool.
