Dave – it appears from your photo that this bird might have a particular form of bacterial conjunctivitis, a disease so often seen in house finches that it came to be known as "finch eye." There are many online descriptions and photographs – you could start at these links, if you're interested.

We have treated the disease successfully many times; it can be cured with ophthalmologic and systemic antibiotics. But first the sick bird has to be caught and brought to a rehab center. Prospects for capture improve as the bird becomes more debilitated due to loss of vision. L

Subject: [Maine-birds] Injured house finch
While in Bath this weekend I photographed this female house finch.
She has a similar problem with her left eye. Both eyes appear damaged, but she's flying around this tree and from tree to tree.
Any suggestions as to what might be happening? Thank you.
