I was mildly surprised to see a male RED BELLIED WOODPECKER the first
thing this morning. He is only the 2nd one that I've seen out here.
The 1st was earlier this year.
I've been watching to see if he would go Flicker-like with ground
insect feeding since that is the best food source on the island.
So far he has feed on citrus (on the ground) and is favouring ground-
scattered sunflower seeds but all in a very sheltered location.
This fellow reminded me that a lot of us may be missing one method
with our efforts to attract this species.
They will take suet if it's not too difficult to access and seem to
really like shelled peanuts.
However, the species does like cirtus and there is a good chance that
it will draw a guest if it is placed on the side of a tree, on a
vertical surface rather than horizontal.
