Re: [Maine-birds] Shearwater... and probable pacific Loon off northeast of Thunderhole

Hi Bill,

Thanks for the possible shearwater sighting. .... I was also out along the eastern shore  today from Sand Beach to Otter Cove.....Many  Northern Gannets, about 50 were seen screaming along the shoreline .    I also had several good looks at what appeared to be Pacific Loon .....north and east of Thunder Hole.  I would ask people to keep an eye out tomorrow for this bird.  Clearly a small dark necked Loon with a small straight bill and clearly not a red-throated which we have seen on several locations this fall.   There were several Common Loon's for comparison and I did happen a few long looks at the bill   but with the decaying weather conditions we soon lost it and could not find it again.

While checking to see what birds might be around in the wind along Ocean Drive in Acadia NP this afternoon I had a small shearwater fly by.  It was in view only a minute and in and out of view in the high seas.  Based on appearance, (dark above, light below, no mottling), size (small), and flight, it was mostly likely a Manx Shearwater.  It was only 50 yards off Thunder Hole but was moving rapidly down wind.  Also present were 25+ adult Gannets, and many Common Eiders.  Difficult viewing due to the wind.
Our nature cruises have ended for the season.  A week early but we had a chance to take the boat out of the water this morning and decided to do so.
