Re: [Maine-birds] Off-topic? Birds, glass, migration

Hi Stella,

I knew this unfortunate fact about glass and it is great to have some more data... thank you...

Also,  I have begun the process of communicating with First Wind scientists about Monitoring efforts for the Bull Hill Wind Farm in Hancock County.   For the first time in history,   we are talking about the visual impact of this Wind Farm  from Acadia National Park.   Although these are slow turning turbines, one of the major risks to migratory birds remains the Location of wind farms in general  and monitoring of this particular site in Hancock County  is extremely important scientifically....  so we can determine the avian impacts.  The Bull Hill site is surrounded by wetland and forested wetland habitats along flight patterns of many thousands of migratory birds moving through the region via this wind tunnel and it is clearly visible from Cadillac Mountain, the loop road, and many other locations.

I will continue to inform this list serve about the Avian monitoring efforts at Bull Hill.  I am now totally amazed at how many scenic views are "impacted"  visually by the Bull Hill Wind farm.   BUT  we are generating electricity from wind.....

More to come.....

Michael

For those interested: The Fatal Light Awareness Program in Toronto has excellent information on their web site about window hits, the number one killer of birds. http://www.flap.org

Windows and cats cause by far more fatalities than turbines and cell towers (not to deny the adverse impact of those structures). You may not be able to change the world, but you can reduce window hits at your home and keep your feline indoors as a start.

Here's a link to an article that reminds us wind turbines are not the only problem. But there are ways to ameliorate both if we are willing to make the effort.
