Finally able to get in on a little of the crazy fallout action on
Monhegan yesterday with Luke Seitz and Derek Lovitch. We only had 5
hours on the island, so we only birded to Lobster Cove and back,
basically, with side trips up the Underhill Trail to try to relocate
(unsuccessfully) the Bell's Vireo reported earlier, a walk down
Wharton Ave., and visits to Fish and Swim Beaches--there were that
many birds! Here's a link to our list, and if you look at the numbers,
keep in mind that we were only birding a very limited part of the
island...

In addition to seeing my lifer LE CONTE'S SPARROW, thanks to Luke and
Derek's patience, it was simply mesmerizing to sit on the beaches and
observe the sheer numbers of birds foraging in the wrack. Dozens of
Palm Warblers, yellow-rumps everywhere, Black-throated Blues at our
feet, Merlins zipping around, the occasional thrill of a chat or a
pocket of Clay-colored Sparrows, even the variety of warblers hopping
around Sherm Stanley's garden (nothing so pretty as a Black-throated
Green Warbler in a bright green lettuce patch)--it was almost sensory
overload! I was very grateful to have finally had a day free to get
back out there while all those birds were still around--and with the
added bonus of the excellent and expert company of Derek and Luke,
from whom I always learn something (even if it doesn't always have to
do with birds).
