Subject: [Maine-birds] Cape Neddick and Nubble Light, Glaucous Gull, Blue Grosbeak, and others, 10/5

Denny Abbott and I spent the moring at Nubble Light and Cape Neddick looking for migrants.  One of the first birds we saw right in the parking lot at Nubble light was a 1st/2nd yr Glaucous Gull - begging for food with the Herring Gulls.  Highlights flying by Nubble Light (9-10 AM) -

  • Peregrines - 5
  • Merlins - 3
  • Gannets - numerous flying south, all adults
  • Common Loons - numerous flying south
  • DC Cormorants - one flock of >500 birds flying south

And there were numerous passerines on the lighthouse island which were identifiable with a scope, including -

  • E Phoebe - 1
  • White-thr-Sparrow - 20
  • Lincoln's Sparrow - 1
  • White-cr Sparrow - 1 im
  • Swamp Sparrow - 2
  • Song Sparrow - 4
  • Palm Warbler - 1
  • Plus Great Cormorants - 3 perched on the island

Then on to the thickets on the peninsula, where we had a fair number of landbirds from 10-12 -

  • YB Sapsucker - at least 7, all im.
  • E Pewee - 1
  • Phoebe - 2
  • Blue-headed Vireo - 5
  • Carolina Wren - 5+
  • Hermit Thrush - 2
  • Yellow-rumped Warbler - 50+
  • Black-and-White Warbler - 4
  • Yellowthroat - 4
  • Chestnut-sided Warbler - 1
  • Parula Warbler - 1
  • Blue Grosbeak - 1
  • Lincoln's Sparrow - 1
  • Pine Siskins - 1 flock of 30, and 2 others

A later stop in Auburn yielded 2 Tennessee Warblers, and a feeding station with 50+ Pine Siskins and 15+ Purple Finches.
