Greetings, birding friends! I just blew off work to live my dream standup paddle-birding adventure with my neighbor and fellow birder Rafael Adams, who owns Soposup in SoPo. We "supped" out to Richmond Island from Kettle Cove and then tromped around the crazy island. Highlights included: Razorbill, 5-6 Yellow-rumped Warblers, 75+ Purple Sandpipers, 6 Great Cormorants, Surf and White-winged Scoters, a Northern Harrier and a probable Northern Flicker. There weren't many land birds out there amidst the snow, gorse and ramshackle pines. But, amazingly, the sheep apparently have already given birth, as we saw 5-6 sturdy lambs among the watchful adults.
Never having paddled a SUP before, it was inevitable that I would take a few headers into Casco Bay. This is why the Birding Gods gave us drysuits.
You, too, can check out standup paddle-birding: Rafael is teaming up with Maine Audubon to offer some SUP+birding programs this spring and summer. Stay tuned!
Peace & good birding,
Scott Cronenweth
