[Maine-birds] Messalonskee Lake - Aug 07

Spectacular morning on Lake Messalonskee.  Crisp temps, Merciless, bright dawn sun, and FAC.  Spent 4 hours paddling slowly around the SE and SW corners.  Highlights:

Black Tern - one remaining bird, an adult
Sandhill Crane - one series of bugles early, then silence

1 Jack Merlin (adult male) plus a hen harrier
 
Least Sandpipers, Spotted sandpipers, Lesser Yellowlegs, W Snipe & 6 Unident peeps overhead

1 Am Bittern - silent all morning, but one posing with bill pointed high

12 Loons, incl. 7 in a group "gang-fishing" and oblivious to my presence

close to 50 Woodies, and a hen GW Teal

6 PBGrebes - 4 seen well, plus others giving their cuckoo-like calls

Silent Swamp Sparrows and Marsh Wrens

...and a huge swarm of swallows, incl. Trees, Barns, Bank (many), Cliffs.
