Hey everyone:
Pat Moynahan and I arrived at the Lyman Morse boatyard around 6 this morning to find a large group of Ring-billed Gulls roosting on building #7. Unfortunately no Mew Gull. With a falling tide the mudflats quickly became exposed and the gulls dispersed up and down the river. After checking a few spots the gull had been seen last week, we went back to the boatyard around 1130 and noticed most of the gulls leaving the flats and flying northwest. We were able to follow them to the Thomaston Pollution Control Plant at the end of Booker Street (off Route 1). There we walked the trail of the Thomaston Town Forest (part of the Georges River Land Trust) to the northern corner of the sewage ponds where we could see 400 Ring-billed Gulls were resting along the center divider of the ponds. Pat's mastery of gray shades was extremely helpful as she was quick to spot the MEW GULL among the flock. The bird remained here for at least the next hour, until we eventually left.
Many thanks to Don for finding this bird and his persistence all week to relocate it!
Good birding,
Doug Hitchcox
