[Maine-birds] Birding the Golden Rd., and more

Bruce Barker, Bruce Cole and myself headed north yesterday and birded as far as the Harvester Rd, Piscataquis Co., west of Baxter State Park.  Following up on Bob Duchesne’s details in an email posted several days back we found a male American Three-toed Woodpecker on the Harvester Rd., 2.8 miles in from the Telos Rd..  We all had very nice looks as it moved around in a stand of taller spruce and with the winnowing of snipe constantly going on at the same time it was a great boreal experience.  A life bird for me and many thanks for reporting the bird and location Bob.

Other birds include a Spruce Grouse on the Telos Rd., Boreal Chickedees, and Gray Jays but we dipped on finding a Black-backed Woodpecker.  There were also a good number of Broad-winged Hawks perched in trees along the Golden Rd.   Still some snow piles on the road edges but the roads themselves were passable if a bit rough.  Feeling almost springlike too as it hit 60 degrees.

Good Birding,
John
