Re: [Maine-birds] BWWAs and Sandhills in Intervale

The birding here this morning was very good. Thanks again to Bill Hancock for the heads up.

The 2 Blue-winged Warblers put on a long singing bout in the isolated trees along the RR right-of-way. Four Sandhills bugled, did a little dance, and generally posed out in the open the entire time I was there. 15 species of warbler (incl: Blue-winged, Canada, NoWaterthrush, Maggies, etc etc).

Also Alder, Least, Willow flies, plus E Kingbird. Chimney swifts filled the air.

Lots of other regulars...

But Finally; distinctly heard what could only have been a King Rail coming from the large marsh at ca 9:55. A single bout of 8 (give or take) notes on a steady rhythm (no crescendo). Totally not like the Am Bittern or Virginia Rails, of which there were several. I spent 1/2 hour trying to talk myself out of this, but failed to do so. I hope somebody else can go spend some time next to the marsh and listen for this distinctive rail's call. I'm acutely aware that this species is very rare in Maine.

...and then an omelet at the New Gloucester Village Store. Great morning.
