Good Morning,
-- I really enjoy reading these posts but I don't usually post, as my birding is very casual these days. With young children in tow, it is usually more like bird scaring when we go for nature walks. However, I was so excited (and startled) when I almost stepped on a Woodcock, when I went out to bring the trash cans in yesterday!!! Previously, I had only seen Woodcock in a much more rural setting during field research projects for Animal Behavior and Ornithology classes (oh, and the one that fell down a chimney, in the summer). This bird must have been taking a break, it was in a sunny (& muddy) spot in my backyard, I was very happy that it was me and not my dog that discovered it.
