A couple decent nights certainly gets the migrants moving. Yesterday saw an increase in already present species. There was a definite pulse with HUMMINGBIRDS. There seems that there are a lot of rather late WHITE THROATED & SONG SPARROWS just moving through. I saw one SAVANNNAH SPARROW that almost qualified as albino. It was the whitest one that I've ever seen. Among the new species today are OVEBIRDS; LEAST FLYCATCHERS; PARULAS, YELLOW & BLACK THROATED BLUE WARBLERS and a mix of THRUSHES including VEERY, HERMIT & WOOD; both male & female TOWEES; EASTERN KINGBIRD Raptors are a daily presence. EAGLES, from 1 to 3, are quite regular and presumed local birds. PEREGRINES are often present and hunting. A couple were seen all day yesterday. 3 or 4 Peregrines have powered through today, with a couple checking our buffet. MERLINS have been slightly less frequent but they are still passing through, usually doing a bit of hunting along the way. Yesterday I saw the 1st HARRIER in over a week. This morning there were 3 Harriers actively hunting. "Our" GANNETS are back and inspecting their former nest sites. Although there were upwards of 10 Gannets socializing at the peak last year, there is a core of 3 individuals. Most likely it's 2 males and 1 female but gender isn't certain. Also back for the season are SPOTTED SANDPIPERS. I saw 8 individuals late today. |
