Today got off to an exceptionally good start with a wood thrush singing from the woodlot next door (a first for my yard) followed by a meadowlark singing in the yard. It's the third I've had here over the years, always on Mother's Day weekend. So that's my Mother's Day meadowlark. They don't usually stick around, though there are two late-mowed fields I think would be suitable habitat. They apparently disagree.
I went for a birdwalk to dig up other new arrivals and had the following:
warblers:
bt green
bt blue (foy)
chestnut sided
n. parula (one today, 6 yesterday)
black and white
ovenbird
yellow warbler (yesterday)
Others:
a vireo --not sure if blue headed or red-eyed
a scarlet tanager (foy)
a great crested flycatcher (foy)
least flycatcher (yesterday, foy)
a hermit thrush
and bobolinks! The bobolinks arrived in our neighborhood on Monday and their numbers have built to our usual bobolink orchestra.
Still missing a number of our usual suspects, but they may be along after the rain.
