[Maine-birds] MACHIAS SEAL ISLAND REPORT

Quite fresh but splattered by Alcid excreta, maybe two and a half
inches deep and some one and a half feet across, it seems nothing more
than an insignificant pile of ROCKWEED.

But perched on a prominent rock outcrop it's a much anticipated and
historic nest: GANNETS on MSI.

Whether they are able to successfully raise young in this spot is
still very, very much in doubt but to move from scouting and roosting
to attempting to nest in just a year is a bit unexpected.
Fingers crossed now for eggs.

The record keepers may tell us otherwise but I think this is the first
Gannet nesting attempt here, at least in modern times.
Except for 1 or 2 nesting on White Horse that failed due to predation
of the chicks, I believe the last Gannets breeding in the Bay of Fundy
were some 180 years ago. (Please, jump in anyone if you have better
information)
