The Greater Portland CBC took place last Saturday, December 15 with 53 participants tallying a record 111 species. The high diversity was accompanied by somewhat lower-than-average count totals for most species. Exceptions were high counts of Canada Geese (2656), American Widgeon (26), Harlequin Duck (37), Double-crested Cormorant (13), Black-crowned Night Heron (5), Turkey Vulture (7), Bald Eagle (18), Eastern Bluebird (29), and American Pipit (6). Thirteen owls of 5 species were found, including a Long-eared and a Snowy. The 91 Pine Grosbeaks fell 11 short of the previous high. For the first time in many years, no new species were added to the count's cumulative list, but a Yellow-breasted Chat, Clay-colored Sparrow, and 2 Red Crossbills were unexpected.
Good Birding and Happy Holidays,
