Re: [Maine-birds] Northern Hawk Owl continues in Houlton

HI William,

I live in Maine but do most of my birding in NH.  There have been reliable Black Legged Kittiwakes at Hampton Beach State Park over the Jetti and frequently above Hampton Harbor.  There is also a fishermans wharf in Seabrook (just north of Hampton Beach State Park) where we have seen Thick Billed Murres and Razorbills.  Pine Grosbeaks were around for a few weeks before the cold snap, but haven't heard or seen much of those lately.  I would also be interestedin the Dovekie and Bohemians if you hear of something.

Dear Maine Birders,

I am  considering a run up to Maine to look for rarities and especially to see  the Northern Hawk Owl and was wondering how reliable the owl has been and was hoping to get some more detailed information on when the best times are to look for the owl and specific directions. Other target birds would be Pine Grosbeak, Bohemian Waxwings, Black-legged Kitiwake, Dovekie, Thick-billed Murre. I would be residing in Ellsworth area about 30 minutes from Bar Harbor and MDI.
I have been to Maine many times in the Summer but never in Winter. I am wondering how the roads are and if a Prius, or Sienna Van is likely to be able to navigate most places to see the target birds listed above. Any advice, directions would be most appreciated.

Best,
William Leigh

While on a pre-Superbowl snack and beverage run yesterday, I stopped in at Houlton and quickly found the Hawk Owl teed up on a utility pole.  The bird snagged a vole in the ditch in front of me and retired to next pole over to daintily swallow it whole.

The bird was on the Access Road behind Yorks car dealership as earlier described.

Ravens won...

Cheers
