Hi Folks,
I stopped briefly yesterday morning at Little Machias Bay to look for whimbrels as the flats were opening up. I did not see any at this summering location for up to 100 birds (usually 20 to 40).
8 Surf scoters
~100 Black scoters - in many small flocks; I could not see the entire area. Based on their distribution, this was a partial count
75 Common eiders
1 Common loon
1 Red-breasted merganser
2 Lesser yellowlegs
5 Double-crested cormorants
1 Great cormorant
~100 Ring-billed gulls
~100 Herring gulls
5 Great black-backed gulls
By the way, this is worth stopping now through September to view whimbrels which can be seen either on the flats, roosting on rocks or in the surrounding blueberry barrens where they feed for part of each day. It can be very good for other shorebirds.
