Re: [Maine-birds] Inland surf scoters

I wonder if it's connected to the phenomena of breeding-plumaged Horned Grebes on inland lakes in July.  I had one at North Pond in Smithfield on July 3, and I was told that someone else had one on another inland lake previous to that.  It was my first record for that species inland in July.

A very reliable source just reported seeing two male surf scoters in Big Musquash Stream near Grand Lake Stream yesterday. Flocks of nonbreeders are findable along the coast in summer, but it’s the first I’ve heard of July scoters inland.
