[Maine-birds] anticlimactic TB Murre

It’s no Surfbird, but the Third Annual Duck Cruise on the Isle au Haut Ferry nearly ran over an unconcerned Thick-billed Murre this afternoon. It was so close, I promptly misidentified it as a common, because I’d never had that good a look before. It didn’t bother to dive, nor swim away.

Altogether, about a 110 Harlequin Ducks were observed and appreciated.

I would be remiss in not mentioning that we had 150 mixed waxwings in Brewer on the drive over, and about 50 mixed waxwings next to the McDonald’s on Broadway in Bangor on the return. We stopped at Gifford’s Ice Cream to celebrate the arrival of spring, and then drove over to Pushaw Road in Bangor, where the local Snowy Owl was conveniently perched on one of his favorite telephone poles. Very, very white.
