> Weather:
> The count had a delayed start today with snow showers lasting through the
> morning hours. Winds were light from the northwest at the start of the
> count and the sky was overcast throughout the count with small periods of
> sunshine. Winds changed to west and strong gusts developed as a cold front
> and snow squalls approached the summit just before the end of our count
> period.
>
> Raptor Observations:
> This is the first report of the season done by this year's official
> counter, me, Andrew Wolfgang. We had a few great looks at raptors today.
> Starting with a resident Bald Eagle soaring just below the summit. It
> landed in a tall pine and provided us with great views. A displaying local
> Cooper's Hawk showed up to show off as well. We had a decent flight of
> Turkey Vultures and a few Red-tailed Hawks. A Sharp-shinned Hawk ended the
> parade of migrating raptors for the day. The last two raptors spotted were
> a local pair of adult Bald Eagles.
>
> Non-raptor Observations:
> Plenty of migrating American Crows today 123 total moving through the area.
> Today at the summit we had a Pileated Woodpecker take some chunks out of an
> Eastern White Pine. He stayed at the summit with the counters for nearly
> three hours. Another migrant who flew over was a lone Pine Siskin.
>
> Predictions:
> Our protocol states that we are not stationed at the count site during
> posted Wind Advisories. Therefore, we will likely be delayed (at least) in
> starting. However if winds diminish enough in the afternoon (we will be
> back up as soon as the Advisory expires), we expect that some large birds
> may be flying when the winds settle down a bit as it will be a clear day.
> We are excited to see which species will pass through tomorrow, and expect
> some migrating raptors passing by the summit.
