Weather:
Clear, windy, and excellent visibility describes the count at Bradbury
Mountain for today. Winds were strongest at the midway point of the count
weakening at the end. The temperature stayed below freezing for the
duration of the count period as well, and wind chills were frigid with
gusts over 30 mph.
Raptor Observations:
Today the first migrant Rough-legged Hawk was recorded for the season. This
bird was heading Northeast, then crossed the face of the watch heading
Northwest over Bradbury Mountain. Two Red-tailed Hawks and a Turkey Vulture
were the other recorded migrants. Bradbury's resident Cooper's Hawk and
local Bald Eagle made a few appearances near the watch site.
Non-raptor Observations:
A total of 19 species observed from the summit today. Two Pileated
Woodpeckers were present on the pine that had been used by one the past two
count days. A Great Black-backed Gull cruised by the lookout on strong
winds as well.
Predictions:
Favorable winds tomorrow from the Southwest. Birds should be moving through
and with gentler winds (5-10 mph) and a high temperature above freezing, it
should be a great day of hawk watching at Bradbury Mountain.
