[Maine-birds] Re: rockland and around

I was up to the breakwater and saw the usual cast of characters, Herring Gulls, Common Eiders, Red Breasted Mergansers, Harlequin Ducks, Buffleheads, Mallards, and American Crows. The find for me there was the 2 Black Guillemot's that were diving out between 2 turquoise lobster pots (if you step off the path onto the breakwater looking perpendicular to the breakwater, they are directly out from there). They were far enough out that my camera could not catch more than a grayish blob in the water, but you could easily make them out with a scope.
One side note, if you are going to attempt the breakwater, be careful, the snow has covered many of the gaps in the rocks and with the warmer temps, some of the hard pack covering the gaps was breaking through. Walking and birding at the same time can be hazardous to your health out there. :-)

I had also been over to Owl's Head Lighthouse and walked down to the cove on the north side of the head and was pleased to find a RB Merg, 2 Common Loons, a Horned Grebe, and a Black Guillemot (whitish phase) playing close enough to shore and patient enough to let me use the camera on them.
One of the more interesting shorebirds there was a Robin that was feeding on something amongst the rocks..

Nothing much else to speak of off the lighthouse though.
It was a beautiful day to be out!
