For some 40 years I've been frustrated that my various scopes would loosen from the tripod plate that holds the scope to the tripod. I know many other birders experience this as well. Screwdrivers and wenches just don't apply enough force to keep the scope in place.
I don't know why it took me so long but I brought the scope to our Richmond machinist, Jim Begin. He's fixed many things for me over the years and is venerated by all Richmond residents for his skill and the clever way he approaches his various challenges. And there was a Va Opossum in his yard!
He squinted at my scope and plate for a while and then decided to tap two tightly threaded holes through the plate and through the footing of the telescope. He then installed two special bolts through the plate and into the scope. The result is wonderful. There are now three bolts attaching the plate to the scope - absolutely no scope wiggle.
I would be careful about having anyone who is not a master machinist perform this process. Jim was very precise about the thread size and there is no slippage of any sort. Jim was very reasonable, <$30, and called me within an hour. He indicated he'd be willing to do this for other birders. His contact: 737-2888. I'd suggest making an appointment, dropping off your scope, birding Green Point or the Abby (as long as someone else has a scope) and then picking the scope up in an hour or so.
I can only say it's a delightful to have a tight scope. I just don't know why it took me so long.
Speaking of scopes and binoculars,if you're in thinking about new optics, it's a very good time to look into purchasing new, and probably used, equipment. The strength of the US dollar has had a dramatic affect of scope prices. If you're in the market, this is a good time to look into a purchase.
